Great Ocean Road

Die beruehmte Great Ocean Road erstreckt sich ueber 250km entlang der Suedkueste zwischen Melbourne und Portland. Kilometerlange Sandstraende sowie felsige Kueste praegen das Bild. Vor allem die 12 Apostel (wovon es aber nur noch 6 gibt) haben uns beeindruckt. Die Kueste ist jedoch noch von weiteren Felsformationen gesaeumt: "London Bridge", "Thunder Cave", "The Granites" und so weiter ... Das meiste der Strasse fuehrt durch den Oatway Nationalpark, der meist aus Regenwald besteht. Ausser Natur gibt es entlang der Strasse nicht viel, der weg ist hier das Ziel!

In Portland befindet der grosse "Aluminium Smelter", der ueber 340'000 Tonnen Aluminium pro Jahr fabriziert. Leider war eine Visitor-Tour nicht moeglich :-(

Famous Great Ocean Road stretches over 250km along the southern coast of Australia between Melbourne and Portland. Long sandy beaches but also rough shore and huge cliffs are predominant along the coast. Especially the "12 Apostels" (of which only 6 are left) made a big impression on us. The coastline is boardered by further rock formations like "London Bridge", Thunder Cave", The Granits" etc... Most of the road lies within the Otaway National Park which mostly consist of rain forest. Besides nature there isn't much to observe, the journey is the reward!

In Portland, the huge aluminum smelter is located just outside town. It produces over 340'000 tons of aluminum per year. Unfortunately we couldn't get a visitor tour :-(

Melbourne

Mit Victoria fahren wir bereits in den dritten Bundesstaat ein, um uns dann in dessen Hauptstadt Melbourne niederzulassen. Hier gibt's wiedermal ne Ladung Kultur (gratis Kunstgallerien sei Dank) und einen gemuetlichen Walk durch das Zentrum an allen wichtigen historischen Gebaeuden und Theatern vorbei. Unser eigentliches Ziel liegt aber an der Dandenong Road, ausserhalb der Stadt. Hier lebt meine ueber 80 Jahre junge Grosstante Beth seit mehr als 40 Jahren und verkauft immer noch jeden Sonntagmorgen selbstgemachte und erstandene Kostbarkeiten auf dem "treasure market", dem lokalen Flohmarkt. Nippes kann also durchaus jung erhalten..:-). Beth's vier Kinder sind alle Australier, jedoch leben drei davon in der Schweiz. Nur der aelteste Sohn Andre ist in Melbourne geblieben. Tante Beth hat's um so mehr genossen, fuer zwei Tage wieder mal Schwiizerduetsch zu reden und ueber die Schweiz zu philosophieren..
       

By entering Victoria we get to the third state of Australia. We're heading for its capital, Melbourne. Here we get another load of culture thanks to the free art galleries and nice walking tour through the centre covering all the important historical buildings including many theaters. But our goal is at the Dandenong Road in the suburbs. Here lives my 80 year young great aunt since more than 40 years. Every sunday morning she's selling home made and other stuff at the local treasure markets. See how old treasures can keep you young! All of Beth's four children are Australians, but three of them live in Switzerland. Only her oldest son Andre who we met as well lives in Melbourne. Aunt Beth enjoyed it very much to philosophize about Switzerland in Swiss German for two days..

 

 

Canberra

Canberra ist die Hauptstadt Australiens und genau so sieht sie auch aus. Die Stadt wurde als solches geplant und gebaut. Capital Hill ist von einer Ringstrasse umgeben und die Seitenstrassen strahlen in alle Himmelsrichtungen aus. Der Gerichtshof, das Parlament, die Landesbibliothek und alle Botschaften sind alle in unmittelbarer Naehe, radial ums Zentrum errichtet worden. Wir besuchten das neue und das alte Regierungsgebaeude und waren beeindruckt, wie offen zugaenglich alles war. Im alten "Capitol" kann man die damaligen Bueroraeumlichkeiten des Premierministers besichtigen. Alles war viel moderater, bescheidener und nostalgischer eingerichtet. Momentan regiert die erste Premierministerin. Wir unterhielten uns mit einer Frau vom Museum und erklaerten ihr das Schweizer Politsystem. Wir mussten feststellen, dass Politiker eigentlich immer gleich sind: Viel versprechen, gewaehlt werden, mit der Opposition streiten, alles bleibt beim Alten, Rueckzug aus der Politik, Feierabend!

Canberra is Australias capital and that's exactly what it looks like. The city was designed and built to be the political centre of the country. Capital Hill is sourrounded by a ring road which side streets and avenues spread out towards all directions. The high court, the parliament, the national library and all the embassies are located within the near vicinity, built radial around the centre. We visited the new and the old parliament house and were impressed how open everything was to visitors. In the "old Capitol" one can roam around the offices once used by the prime minister and all the other leaders of Australia. The interior was much more modest and nostalgic than these days. At the moment, the first woman in Australias history acts as prime minister. We've talked to a lady that works in the museum and explained here the Swiss political system. We came to the conclusion that all politicians round the world behave in the same way: Make promises, get elected, argue with oposition party, everything stays the same, pullout of politics, call it a day!

Blue Mountains

Nicht weit von Sydney befinden sich die Blue Mountains. Weg vom Stadtlaerm und der Hitze liegt der Nationalpark. Das Klima ist wieder etwas kuehler und wechselhafter als an der Kueste. Nebst dem waldigen Gebiet mit Eukalyptusbaeumen, Farnen und weiteren exotischen Pflanzen ist es der riesige Canion, der sich ueber dutzende von Kilometern erstreckt. Es gibt auch immer wieder einen kleinen Wasserfall, der ueber die rot-gelben Felsen plaetschert und Papageien, die ueber die Baumkronen segeln. Ein Highlight stellen auch die Felsformationen der "Three Sisters" dar, welche echte Touristenattraktion sind.

The Blue Mountains are located not far from Sydney. Away from dust, noise and heat we find this lovely national park. The climate is more cool and dynamic than at the coast line. Besides the forest which consists mostly of eucalyptus trees, fern and other exotic plants it is the huge canion which stretches over dozens of kilometers. Every now and then we observe cascades plashing over the red-yellowish rock and parrots that fly over the treetops. One of the highlights of the park are clearly the "Three Sister", a rock formation that atracts many tourists visiting the park.

Australia - Sydney

Vom bezaubernden Neuseeland wurden wir auf einen anderen Kontinent und in eine andere Welt katapultiert. Wir staunten nicht schlecht, als wir durch das riesige Sydney wanderten auf der Suche nach zwei freien Betten im Dorm. In keinem der zig Hostels im Zentrum (und man will im Zentrum sein damit man nicht eine Stunde im Zug reisen muss um das Opernhaus zu sehen) hatte auch nur eine Pritsche frei. Schliesslich wurden wir doch noch fuendig in einem halboffiziellen Mehrbettenhaus nahe der Elisabethstreet. Dann ging's raus in den Darling Harbour. Wir kamen aus dem Staunen auch hier nicht mehr raus: eine bombastische Skyline, Entertainer auf der Strasse (von Comedy bis Breakdance war alles dabei), Feuerwerk und aufgetackelte Frauen mit Miniminiroecken en masse. Ich meine ultramini, manchmal musste man sich verschaemt umdrehen, weil man etwas zuviel des Allerwertesten der jungen Dame nebenan sehen konnte. Samstagabend in Sydney, das bedeutet Party pur. Auf dem Boot, im Club und im Bus (kein Witz, es gibt "Partybusse", Clubs auf Raedern sozusagen).Wir fuehlten uns etwas underdressed mit unseren Teva-Reiselatschen und T-Shirts, liessen uns aber die Show nicht entgehen.
Allgemein hat uns Sydney sehr beeindruckt und sehr gut gefallen. Neben den obligatorischen Highlights wie der Harbourbridge und dem Opernhaus streiften wir durch das alte Hafenviertel und gingen auf Tuchfuehlung mit den vorwitzigen Kakadus im Park, echte Spassvoegel sind das.

From the charming NZ we were drawn to another continent and another world. Walking through the huge city looking for two beds in a dorm we couldn't believe that there was no free space in any of the many hostels in the center (where you want to stay if you don't intent to travel by train for one hour to see the Opera House). In the end we found a semi-official place near Elisabeth street. Then we were exploring Darling Harbour with our mouths wide open: a huge skyline, streetperformers everywhere (from comedy to breakdancing you could have it all), firework and heaps of women who were dressed to kill. I mean the dresses were so short that from time to time you had to turn away in shame because you could see just a tiny bit to much of that bum (I turned, anyway..). Saturday night in Sydney, that's just pure party. There are partboats, clubs and even partybuses (literally a club on wheels). We felt a bit underdressed in our travelsandals and t-shirts but were enjoying the show anyway.
Generally Sydney impressed us and we really liked it. Besides the must see's like the harbour bridge and the opera house we strolled through the old docks and met some cheeky kakadoo's in the park.
