Holy Varanasi

Falls Terry Prachett plant, noch mehr seiner Scheibenwelt-Romane zu verfilmen, haetten wir den idealen Drehort dafuer gefunden: Varanasi, im indischen Staat Uttar Pradesh. Die Parallelen zur fiktiven Stadt Ankh-Morpork sind verblueffend: in beiden nimmt das chaotische Treiben in den engen Gaesschen kein Ende, es gibt die verschiedensten Berufsgilden (wie heilige Maenner oder die Diebesgilde) und beide Staedte liegen an einem Fluss, in dem der H2O-Anteil so gering ist, dass man, wenn man flink ist, darueber laufen kann. Beim Ganges sollte man es als Nicht-Inder allerdings nicht riskieren. Die Verschmutzung durch Schwermetalle, Plastik und menschliche Ueberreste ist so stark, dass dort keine Fische mehr ueberleben koennen. Toxisch hin oder her, der Ganges ist einer der heiligsten Fluesse ueberhaupt fuer Hindus und viele Pilger kommen von weit her, um sich hier von ihren Suenden rein zu waschen. Wer hier kremiert wird, dem werden drei Wiedergeburten erspart. An den vielen Ghats (Treppen) zum Fluss befinden sich unzaehlige Tempel und Schreine und die Leute kommen ausser zum Beten auch taeglich zum Baden, Waesche waschen, machen Yoga oder plaudern. Als herkoemmlicher Tourist wird man mit weniger heilig anmutenden Schikanen wie einem Heer von penetranten Seidenverkaeufern und uebereifrigen Taxi/Riksha/Tuktuk-Fahrern konfrontiert. Kuehe saeumen enge Gassen und versperren Hauseingaenge, Abfall pflastert die Strassen (auch heilige Kuehe machen Mist) und die Leute sehen einem an, als ob man von einem anderen Stern kommt und so fuehlen wir uns auch manchmal. Trotzdem oder gerade deshalb hat die heilige Stadt ihren ganz eigenen Charme und wir haben unsere Nerven und Maegen haben ihre Feuerprobe in Indien bestanden.

If Terry Prachett is planning to bring more of his discworld-novels to cinema, we have found the ideal place to do so: Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The similarities to the fictitious city of Ankh-Morpork are striking: In both of them, the chaotic actions in the narrow alleyways does not stop for a second, there are the most diverse guilds (like the "holy men" or the "thieves guild") and both places are located at a river in which the actual water content is so small that if one is fast enough, it can be crossed running. In the case of Ganga, this is a risky undertaking for Non-Indians since the pollution with plastics, heavy metals and human remains is so drastic that the river contains no fish anymore. Toxic or not, the Ganga is one of the holiest rivers on this planet for hindus and loads of pilgrims come from far away to wash off their sins. Whoever is cremated here can spare three re-incarnations. At the many ghats (stairs) are uncountable shrines and temples and besides prayer, the people gather here to clean themselves, wash clothes, do some yoga or just for a chat. As a common tourist however, daily live consists more of non-holy hassle of touts, silk shop owners, taxi/rikshaw/tuktuk drivers, beggars and other lunetics. Cows make their way through the narrowest streets, block entraces into houses, feces and rubish piles up on the street (in fact the stuff sometimes "builds" the street) and everyone is looking as we were from another star and that's exactly how we feel sometimes. Despite or exactly because of that, this holy city has a special charme and we passed our first test of nerves and germs in India.

Pokhara

Pokhara ist die zweitgroesste Stadt in Nepal und liegt an einem wunderschoenen See. Das Zentrum der eigentlichen Stadt befindet sich eher noerdlich der Touristenzone. Dort befindet sich ebenfalls das Ausbildungszentrum der beruehmt-beruechtigen Ghorka Soldaten, die von der britischen Armee ausgebildet werden. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Spezialeinheit, die urspruenglich aus Maennern aus der Umgebung des Gorkha-Forts bestand, welche sich schon vor den Weltkriegen zu Zeiten des Commonwealth als besonders tapfere, entschlossene und loyale Kaempfer bewiesen haben. Zu den Auserkorenen zu gehoeren, ist nach wie vor aeusserst beliebt unter jungen Nepalesen, nicht zuletzt wegen der guten Besoldung. Diese Fremdenlegion der Briten hat ganz bestimmt kein Nachwuchsproblem.

Da es Monsunzeit ist und die meisten Aktivitaeten draussen stattfinden wuerden, verbringen wir die Zeit eher mit Lesen als Wandern. Bei Sonnenschein jedoch kommt das Panorama der Berge sowie die Weltfriedenspagode voll zum Tragen.

Pokhara is the second biggest city in Nepal and is situated at a beautiful lake. The actual center of the city is located a bit further north of the tourist zone. It's just across the narrow but deep gorge where the recruitment center of the British ghorkas has it's headquarters. The Ghorkas are special forces which consisted originally  of of young men from the region around the Ghorka fort, which have already proven bravery and determination even before the world wars during the common wealth. To be among the chosen ones is still very appreciated by young Nepalese men, also because of the good payment. This foreign legion of the Brits has certainly no problem finding new blood.

Since it is rainy season here and most of the activities around Pokhara are outdoor ones, we spend more time reading books than hiking around. However, when the sun shows up the views on the mountains and the world peace pagoda are just gorgeous.

Bhaktapur

Eine Autostunde von Kathmandu befindet sich der kleine Ort namens Bhaktapur. Er war einer der vielen Hauptorte der vielen Koenigreiche, die es seinerzeit in Nepal gab. So gibt es auch hier einen Durbar Square , denn jeder der Koenige versuchte, den anderen in Glanz und Pomp seines Reiches zu uebertreffen. Zugegebenermassen gab es andere Herrscher, die mehr Pomp hervorbrachten, aber die Altstadt Bhaktapurs hat seinen damaligen Charme wohl kaum verloren und man fuehlt sich direkt ins Mittelalter zurueckversetzt , wenn man durch die Gassen schlendert. Wenn man genau hinschaut, findet man sogar die erotischen Darstellungen der Kamasutra-Lehre. Kuehe sowie Haendler und Glaeubige, die ihre Opfergaben darbieten, sind omnipresent. Ebenfalls die grossen oeffentlichen Brunnen zur persoenlichen Hygiene werden immer noch rege genutzt, wenn auch nur zur Kleiderwaesche. In einem der Pools beindet sich eine Statue einer Schlange. Sie wird "Naga" genannt und gilt unter tibetischen Buddhisten wie auch Hinduisten als unter der Erde lebende Kreatur, die als Waechter von Tueren und Portalen agiert. Diese Halbgottheit tritt oft auch in irdischer Form auf und nimmt die Gestalt von Menschen an. Einige Leute scheuen die Arbeit in Minen ausAngst ,sie wuerden mit ihrem Werkzeug Naga verletzen, was zu grossem Unheil fuehren kann.

One hour drive from Kathmandu lies the small place called Bhaktapur. It was one of the many capitols of the many kingdoms that once existed in Nepal. And so it comes that also this village has a Durbar square since all the rulers tried to show off more of their wealth and pomp to other neighboring kings. We have to admit that there were other emperors that created more "pomp", but nevertheless the town probably hasn't lost any of it's charme and one feels beamed into medieval times when roaming through the narrow alleyways.. If one looks carefully there are even some erotic displays from the art of Kamasutra to be discovered. Cows as well as traders and believers who make their offerings to the gods are omnipresent. Also the public big fountains  for personal hygiene purposes remain, even if just for washing clothes, in frequent use. In one of the pools we find a statue of a snake. The serpent is called Naga and is believed to be a creature living under ground which serves as protector for doors and gates. This semi god also shows up on earth every now and then in a human form. Some people are afraid of mining since they could hurt Naga with their tools which would lead to great misfortune.
