Die Hauptstadt Laos hat etwas ueber eine million Einwohner hat aber nicht wirklich Grossstadtcharakter. Das Leben in der Stadt ist ebenfalls ziemlich simpel und man trifft viele arme Leute an welche jedoch immer freundlich sind. Wie in Luang Prabang ist der franzoesische Einfluss der damaligen Kolonialmacht noch stets zu spueren. Es gibt viele Kaffees die Baguettes und Croissants servieren. Lecker! Neben charmvollen Zentrum gibts aber auch Viertel die etwas mehr vernachlaessigt sind. Das National Museum zum Beispiel befindet sich in einem ziemlich desolaten Zustand. Auch die Polizisten die hier manchmal in Gruppen am Stassenrand in Gartenstuehlen rumlungern und ausser eine Uniform zu tragen keine wirkliche Aufgabe haben lassen die Ineffizienz des kommunistischen Staatsapparat durchschimmern. Das einzige wirkliche Monument ist eine Kopie des Arc de Triomphe im asia style der aus Zement gebaut wurde, der eigentlich zum Bau eines Flughafens von den USA gespendet wurde.

The Lao capital accomodates about one million citizens but doesn't really has a character of a big city. Live in town ist still pretty simple and we've met quite a few very poor people along the road which are very friendly though. Like in Luang Prabang, the french influence can still be found in one of the many cafes which serve baguette a croissants. Good stuff! Besides the charmfull city centre there are also some quarters which were a bit neglected over the last years. For example the national museum is in devastating conditions. Also the loads of police officers that linger around in groups and do not seem to have a real purpose but wearing a shiny uniform are just one sign of the inefficiency of the comunist governement. The only real monument in town is a copy of the arc de triomphe asia style which was built with concrete which was donated by the US to actually build an airport.
